The Basics

The 2-Minute Rule

The 2-Minute Rule

You lose momentum when actions sit untouched after a meeting. The quickest fix is to start every action before you leave the room. All you need is the first two minutes.

Save time at the end of every meeting to complete the first two minutes of each action that was agreed-to.

Two types of actions

  1. You can do it yourself
  2. It involves someone else

If you can do it yourself…

Can it be done in two minutes or less?

— Do it now.

If it takes longer:

— Estimate how much time you need

— Add that time to your calendar

— Title the event with the action name “Write client proposal”

If it involves someone else…

Do you already have a meeting with them scheduled?

— Add the action to that agenda.

If you don’t, send them a message:

— If it takes two minutes or less, send it now.

— If it takes longer, schedule time to write it.

Create momentum

Once you complete the first two minutes, the action is in motion. It’s far more likely to get finished on time.

Matt Mochary taught me this, and I use it in every meeting.
